March is the beginning of the spring thaw in the himalayas. After the last snowfall and rain of the end of winter, the landscape comes alive. The first sign of life is rhododendron trees blooming with their unmissable bright red flowers! The sweet fragrance of these flowers fills the mountainsides and attracts the birds and honeybees. The trails in our villages abound with rhododendron trees and you literally feel like you are in heaven! We teach you how the nectar is extracted from the rhododendron flower and made into juice and preserves. Along the trail, you will be plucking your own rhododendron flowers and making juice to carry back home with you!
After we are done learning to make rhododendron juice, it is time to celebrate holi in the Himalayas. We will be using the leftover pulp from rhododendron flowers to make an organic healthy gulal and loading our pichkaris! Holi will end with an afternoon visit to the heritage village of Doni which will culminate in a traditional dinner spread.
In this trip you will realise why the Tons Valley is a heady mix of architecture, agriculture, cuisine, culture, folklore and stunning landscape. Come sample a style of living that has been lying forgotten in time!
HIGHLIGHT:

Sunday, March 05
7.00 am reporting at pick-up point in Dehradun City. Drive from Dehradun to Rupin River Camp (190 kms, 7 hours). Check into our camp by late afternoon. Campfire and dinner.

Accommodation: High tents (twin-sharing) by the river bank. Western toilet tents with health faucets (shared).
Monday, March 06
Late breakfast and easy morning. Early afternoon walk to swim spots on river or waterfall nearby to play in water.
Lunch and can walk around the river.
Evening training session to learn to make rhododendron juice over campfire.
Accommodation: High tents (twin-sharing) by the river bank. Western toilet tents with health faucets (shared).
Tuesday, March 07
Post-breakfast head out into jungle to collect rhododendron flowers. Return for lunch and prepare the flowers. Evening session to make your own rhododendron juice and preserve to carry back home.

Wednesday, March 08
After breakfast, celebrating Holi in the camp followed by river bathing. Lunch at camp.
2 pm departure to visit heritage village Doni and see the stunning architecture there. 6 pm onwards cooking of a traditional meal will begin in the kitchen of a massive heritage. Guests will have opportunity to learn local cooking and participate in cooking process. Return to river camp post dinner.

Thursday, March 09
After breakfast, departure to Dehradun. Reach Dehradun by 6 pm.
